The low levels of sodium pentobarbital that dogs might receive through their food are unlikely to cause any health problems, according to an FDA study. During the 1990s, the FDAs Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) received reports from veterinarians that pentobarbital seemed to be losing its effectiveness for anesthesia in dogs. Based on these reports, the center decided to investigate the theory that the dogs were exposed to pentobarbital through dog food, and that this exposure was making them less responsive to pentobarbital when it was used as a drug. CVM developed and used a sophisticated process to detect and quantify minute amounts of pentobarbital in dog food. Upon finding pentobarbital residues in some samples of dry dog food, CVM scientists conducted further tests that led them to conclude that dogs eating dry dog food are unlikely to have any adverse health effects from the low levels of pentobarbital found in the dog food samples tested.

In practice the subject matter handled by real property lawyers is much broader. Many of the areas of law within real estate practice are areas of specialty themselves. Real estate lawyers examine and evaluate real property titles, handle real estate sales, purchases and other transactions, foreclose mortgages, represent developers and contractors in drafting and negotiating development and construction agreements, handle real estate financing, structure and draft the governing documents for planned developments such as condominiums, serve as counsel to community and condominium associations, draft and negotiate leases, litigate title, boundary, and other land disputes, and advise clients respecting zoning and land: use matters. The examination of real estate titles requires knowledge of corporations and other forms of business organization, wills, trusts and estates, and a practitioner handling transactions must understand contractual, business, and tax subjects as well. The subjects that are tested on the certification exam attest to this diversity. They are title issues; real estate finance; environmental and land use; condominiums and homeowner associations; landlord tenant; closings; sellers, buyers, brokers, and title insurers; real property litigation; taxation of entities and other tax issues; and ethics. Some hold an impression that at least some aspects of the real estate practice are not challenging, that the practice is increasingly title company, form, and paralegal driven, and that when business is light any lawyer with a good paralegal can Ado real estate closings. Communications media networks were born with the 1926 radio sign-on of the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) signaling the dawn of a new era of both communications and culture in America. The network concept is purely abstract–even in its practical form nothing but a series of wires or satellite connections. Yet the history and influence of the broadcast networks is one of the great stories of the twentieth century for though they did not create it the networks did cement the process of homogenizing American culture. By 1930 for the first time America was whistling to the same tunes laughing at the same comedians hearing the same politicians speeches–instantaneously. The taste and judgement of a relative few urban Northeastern network executives set national standards of everything from dialect and language to fashion and behavior. Only when the influence of the old-line networks had faded by the end of the century was it truly possible to grasp the power they held over the nation for so long.Though the number of networks has grown exponentially over the decades with the technology of their distribution methods improving by light-years the concept has remained the same. A network is simply a set of affiliate stations that receive programming from one central source then beam that programming by some method either broadcast wave or cable wire into the eyes and ears of a waiting public.

Exercise and Cancers: Research Opportunities for Health-Related Fitness ScientistsRepresentatives from the American Cancer Society (ACS), the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) will challenge AAHPERD members to contribute to cancer prevention and control, describing the most promising research opportunities and resources to support investigation of the relationships between cancers and exercise. The presentation will be based on a synoptic article being developed by the ACS and the Office for Health Promotion of Northern Illinois University. Ruth Corcoran of ACS will describe a proposed collaborative research agenda, suggesting that two sets of consensually developed guidelines are needed to promote such research: one set to facilitate dissemination of what experts already know to the public and providers (including exercise specialists); and a second set to facilitate further collaborative research. Speakers from CDC and NCI will outline what is known about these topics, and how exercise scientists can contribute to further development (see accompanying abstracts). Presenters will recommend a process to develop research priorities, involving cancer experts, public health scientists, and relevant interest groups in AAHPERD. Bone conduction microphones are used in communications systems in noisy environments, such as at fire sites, construction sites, and around helicopters. When a person speaks, the cranial bones vibrate in accordance with the sounds produced by their vocal cords. A bone conduction microphone converts cranial bone vibrations to electrical signals that can be communicated to a two-way radio. This way, the microphone doesnt pick up a lot of ambient noise. Mine Safety Appliances in the US hopes to bring us a microphone that is easily added to and removed from any type of protective helmet. When the helmet is being worn, the weight of the device is carried on a support that rests on the upper edge of the headband. In this way, the headband secures the microphone in direct engagement with the users head and can be easily secured to the headband without using or adjusting various moveable parts. A 36-mm condenser microphone for sound pressure measurements was introduced in 1950. The microphone was designed and developed by Dr. Schlegel from the Danish company Ortofon with a brass housing and aluminium diaphragm. The microphone was manufactured by Ortofon. They would produce batches often units and the production was shared between BK and another Danish company Radiometer. The new microphone was certainly an improvement over the Rochelle salt microphone as it could be calibrated with an electrostatic actuator. This method was also developed by Dr. Schlegel from Ortofon. The most common measurement microphones of the day are shown in Figure 1. In 19551 was sent to USA to implement service and sales at Brush Electronics in Cleveland, Ohio. This was my first introduction to real measurement microphones in the form of the Western Electric 640AA and the ANSI 224.4-1949 standard (see Figure 1). I knew of the W.E. 640AA from Beraneks Acoustic Measurements and from a doctoral thesis by A. Kjerbye Nielsen “Microphone Measurements.” In 1947 he invented a practical reciprocity calibration technique. Later this method was further developed by Dr. P. Rubak for more precise calibration. This was the basis of the IEC 327 standard. I had the opportunity to travel extensively in the US, meeting many acousticians, and to be exposed to many applications from rocket testing to listening for beetles moving inside oranges. On my return to Denmark, BK was having problems with the quality of the 36-mm microphones. The aluminium diaphragms were easily corroded and tended to develop short-circuiting whiskers between the diaphragm and backplate. I was asked by Viggo Kjær to work on a 1-inch microphone compatible with the ASA 224.4 standard. I developed a new design, where the diaphragm could be screwed onto the front of the microphone body and allowed diaphragm tension to be adjusted from the front. The W.E. 640AA and the ECL MR-103 were adjusted by moving the internal assembly.

Reliant Energy has completed installation and placed in service the final module of upgrades to the flue gas desulfurization (scrubber) system at its coal-fired Elrama Power Plant in Elizabeth, Pa. The $10 million scrubber upgrades have further reduced SO2 emissions from Elrama by over 30 percent and are expected to reduce particulate matter emissions, or opacity, which refers to the darkness of the smoke emitted from the plant, according to Reliant. The craze for litigation based on whiplash - neck - injuries lasted through the Sixties and Seventies. Insurance companies paid out billions of dollars to claimants who were inventing their injuries entirely or, at best, creatively exaggerating them. But the whiplash phenomenon was just one small part of an unpublicised American industry: a criminal underworld devoted to the faking of personal injuries. This is not a book about a few slippery lawyers and doctors conspiring with greedy accident victims to talk up their symptoms and prognoses in order to exact additional compensation. Those scams exist but are the small beer of the trade. What Ken Dornstein describes in Accidentally on Purpose is a veritable gangland of ruthless, sophisticated operators using modern methods to defraud insurance companies out of huge sums. Here is one example: the “capper” is the planner, the choreographer, whose job is to stage an accident that will look like the real thing and lead to multiple claims. He hires “dummies”, the victims, often poor Hispanic immigrants. For as little as $100 each, they will pack into a car (”the squat car”) that they know will be involved in an accident. The capper then hires a specialist driver whose job is to provoke an innocent trucker into crashing into the squat car. The logistics are carefully planned: where, when and what kind of impact is required. The accident achieved, the dummies file their injury claims with the help of dishonest lawyers. Of course, they dont receive a cent of the proceeds. Occasionally, the staging goes wrong and the dummies are hurt badly or even killed. Recently, an attorney who masterminded these “swoop-and-squat” operations was indicted for his part in the death of a passenger in a squat car. Dornstein started his career as a private investigator in Los Angeles, looking into suspicious accidents. His book describes dozens of varieties of contemporary scams. But his exhaustive historical trawl is even more intriguing. The sheer imagination and expertise of some past fraudsters is impressive. In the early, jolting days of rail travel, there was “railway spine”, an alleged injury caused by sudden movements. “Slip-and-fallers” have been around for a century: “Banana Annie” carried her own peels for slipping on. One frequent claimant was capable, at will, both of dislocating her bones, and of haemorrhaging. Another regular had the advantage of a neck which, under X-ray, always showed up as broken. During the Depression years the fad was for self-mutilation, with the cleverer claimants managing to cash in from several companies on the basis of one “accidental” amputation. Along the way, Dornstein divertingly investigates the terminology of his subject. The term “ambulance chaser” - originally not the lawyer, but his tout - entered the language in the 1890s and was in common use by 1910. Shyster, to mean a dishonest lawyer, did not come, as is usually believed, from the nefarious activities of Sheuster, a New York attorney; Dornstein has discovered an earlier use and, besides, can find no trace of the existence of Sheuster. Accidentally, on Purpose contains a great deal of information which has never before been assembled, on a topic which has never before been so scrutinised. Dornstein has done prodigious research (his references amount to 70 pages) and does not always resist the temptation to tell us too much. On the other hand the book is clearly written, contains many interesting and obscure facts, and provides an insight into yet another, hitherto secret, crooked world.

A trip in a stretched limousine has rew- arded Fartown High School pupils. Six students were given the special trip for having a 100% attendance record in the school year and for improving behaviour. The students were driven from school to Scammonden Water, where they enjoyed games and a picnic. The initiative was org- anised by teacher Joanne Carter and project worker Sarah Clarke.

Exercise and Cancers: Research Opportunities for Health-Related Fitness ScientistsRepresentatives from the American Cancer Society (ACS), the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) will challenge AAHPERD members to contribute to cancer prevention and control, describing the most promising research opportunities and resources to support investigation of the relationships between cancers and exercise. The presentation will be based on a synoptic article being developed by the ACS and the Office for Health Promotion of Northern Illinois University. Ruth Corcoran of ACS will describe a proposed collaborative research agenda, suggesting that two sets of consensually developed guidelines are needed to promote such research: one set to facilitate dissemination of what experts already know to the public and providers (including exercise specialists); and a second set to facilitate further collaborative research. Speakers from CDC and NCI will outline what is known about these topics, and how exercise scientists can contribute to further development (see accompanying abstracts). Presenters will recommend a process to develop research priorities, involving cancer experts, public health scientists, and relevant interest groups in AAHPERD.
