This launch constitutes a strategic move as 45% of French families own at least one dog or cat, of which there are about 17 million. Chilled pet-foods are, however, non-existent in France, and this is likely to create a new niche in the F3,000m petfood market in France.
ONE of the most successful sectors of the pet food market in recent years–complete dry dog food–is to receive a massive boost from brand-leader Pedigree Chum during 1994. With value growth of 40% in grocery during 1993 Ian Davies, Pedigree Chum Marketing Manager, sees this as the biggest dog food opportunity of the 90s. By enhancing the quality and choice of the best-selling Pedigree Chum Complete range and supporting it with the biggest promotional campaign ever seen in this sector, Pedigree Chum aims to drive the complete dry market to new heights. In addition, a greater range will now be available in the shape of three varieties for adult dogs, and a new Puppy Food. The attractive new packaging and selection of pack sizes round off this major step forward, for both dog owners and retailers alike.
Mintels latest petfood research finds a growth in the sales of dogfood, the value increasing by almost 20% between 1995-2000 to reach 856m [pounds sterling]. This increase has occurred despite declining dog ownership levels. The number of consumers owning dogs has fallen by approaching three percentage points since 1985, with cat ownership having risen by a similar amount over the same period. The market for dogfood is broadly segmented into moist, complete dry (CDDF), mixers, dog treats and semimoist. The treats and CDDF sectors have performed well since 1995, sales increasing by 16% and 69% respectively. The largest sector, moist, has decreased 2% over the same five year period. As with cats, there are complete foods available for dogs at various lifestages, including varieties for overweight dogs and even recipes for large breeds and sporting or working dogs.

MORE homes are set for a facelift as part of regeneration plans. Gateshead Council has submitted an application for planning permission to carry out major works to homes in Watt Street, Telford Street, Hedley Street, Stephenson Street, Saltwell Road and Whitehall Road, in Bensham. Coun David Napier, right, cabinet spokesman for housing, says: This is a huge programme which will benefit thousands of local residents.
Homeowners looking to refurbish their houses but unwilling to use expensive credit cards to finance it will soon be served by a new, locally based loan company specializing in home improvement loans. American First Mortgage Source Inc. will open Feb. 1 at 504 W. Mission Ave., in Escondido. Jess Chinchillas, founder of the company, recently returned to the county after serving as vice president for The Money Store, a Sacramento-based home lender. The home improvement loan is secured by a lien on the subject property, he added. Since the average home improvement loan is smaller than other kinds of home equity loans, but has just as much paperwork, the points charged are usually proportionally higher, he added.

Paul Heaton is back from his holidays in the Canaries where he writes the songs. The Beautiful South are back, too and they are at the Carling Academy Newcastle on Sunday and their new album, Superbi, is fresh, modern and pointed, like a brand new pencil. We always mean to be fresh, says Paul, but we never get around to it. In a career that has spanned nearly two decades, The Beautiful South may possibly have earned the right to lie back and go stale.
epoch has recognised that there are things pleasing to contemplate independently of the desire we may feel for them. He has no preconceived definition of beauty. Beauty and art were not always so closely related as today: beauty belonged originally to nature, not to created things. This book is therefore a history of Beauty and not a history of art (or of literature or music. Somewhat ironically, however, ideas of beauty are here mainly illustrated by works of art and not, for example, by loaves of beautifully made bread or beautifully laid brick walls. Images and textual selections work together to show that there is no absolute concept of beauty in things or men but criteria shaped by different eras and places.

The low levels of sodium pentobarbital that dogs might receive through their food are unlikely to cause any health problems, according to an FDA study. During the 1990s, the FDAs Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) received reports from veterinarians that pentobarbital seemed to be losing its effectiveness for anesthesia in dogs. Based on these reports, the center decided to investigate the theory that the dogs were exposed to pentobarbital through dog food, and that this exposure was making them less responsive to pentobarbital when it was used as a drug. CVM developed and used a sophisticated process to detect and quantify minute amounts of pentobarbital in dog food. Upon finding pentobarbital residues in some samples of dry dog food, CVM scientists conducted further tests that led them to conclude that dogs eating dry dog food are unlikely to have any adverse health effects from the low levels of pentobarbital found in the dog food samples tested.

Real estate practice is a broad and widely defined area of the law. In a pristine sense it deals with the esoteric subject of real property law and titles. In practice the subject matter handled by real property lawyers is much broader. Many of the areas of law within real estate practice are areas of specialty themselves. Real estate lawyers examine and evaluate real property titles, handle real estate sales, purchases and other transactions, foreclose mortgages, represent developers and contractors in drafting and negotiating development and construction agreements, handle real estate financing, structure and draft the governing documents for planned developments such as condominiums, serve as counsel to community and condominium associations, draft and negotiate leases, litigate title, boundary, and other land disputes, and advise clients respecting zoning and land: use matters. The examination of real estate titles requires knowledge of corporations and other forms of business organization, wills, trusts and estates, and a practitioner handling transactions must understand contractual, business, and tax subjects as well. The subjects that are tested on the certification exam attest to this diversity. They are title issues; real estate finance; environmental and land use; condominiums and homeowner associations; landlord tenant; closings; sellers, buyers, brokers, and title insurers; real property litigation; taxation of entities and other tax issues; and ethics. Some hold an impression that at least some aspects of the real estate practice are not challenging, that the practice is increasingly title company, form, and paralegal driven, and that when business is light any lawyer with a good paralegal can Ado real estate closings. This impression is not accurate. As with any area of practice, successfully representing clients in real estate matters requires knowledge, skill, and experience. The diversity in real estate practice may mean that no one lawyer can be an expert in each practice area encompassing the modern real property practice or that are tested by the certification program. That, however, is not a reason to not seek certification. The committee recognizes that few lawyers are likely to possess specific and detailed expertise in each of the many subjects that fall within the scope of real estate.
Real estate is a popular investment among Canadians. There are several advantages to investing in real estate. Real estate is leveraged. You may pay only a fraction (as low as 10%) of what the property is worth when you buy it. Real estate has utility. If you buy stocks or bonds, you cannot do anything with them; but when you buy real estate, you can use it until you sell it. For example, you can live in a house.

“There are [more than] 30 million Americans who have no health insurance and another 20 million who have inadequate health insurance,” says Rep. Louis Stokes (D0Ohio), chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus Health Brain Trust. “It is mandatory that we begin to try and give Americans–particularly minorities–adequate health care as a right.” The Bush plan would give people not covered by Medicaid tax credits, and families making less than $80,000 a year tax deductions to pay for medical costs. He would also pass laws to ensure that even chronically ill patients could receive health insurance. The plan has received a cool reception on Capitol Hill, and alternate proposals, including a full-scale, government-paid national health insurance plan, are under development. But what does America really want for its health care system? The views are many.

NETWORKINGHISTORICAL ACHIEVEMENTS IN COMMUNICATION AND TRANSPORTATIONNetworks were developed as a communication method between computers at remote sites. They trace their roots back to nineteenth-century communication and transportation historical achievements. In America, people have always strived for faster travel and communication systems, particularly between the East and West Coasts. These systems included technology and experiments of varying complexity. For example, the Pony Express operated between 1860 and 1861. It provided seven-day mail service between St. Joseph, Missouri, and Sacramento, California. In 1861 the Western Union Telegraph Company replaced the Pony Express and provided a faster, more reliable communication service. Furthermore, the transcontinental railroad was completed at Promontory, Utah, in 1869. These events improved the telegraph industry. The telephone was invented in 1876, and the first transcontinental telephone line was joined at Wendover, Utah, in 1915. This national telephone network provided a foundation for the wide area computer networks that evolved later in the twentieth century.

NINE million Britons now regularly use complementary medicines to ease aches and pains. Growing numbers of mainstream doctors are practising alternative therapies and more than 40 per cent of surgeries now offer access to them. But which medicines have been scientifically shown to work? Today Sunday Mirror Health Correspondent SHARON COLLINS guides you through the most effective treatments.
LIKE ALL health reporters, I get a lot of books sent to me - the vast majority promoting some new (or not so new) alternative therapy. You know the sort of thing. Why Zebras Dont Get Ulcers (a guide to stress), The Nine Myths of Ageing, and Yoga for Pregnancy are three of the latest. Most go straight on the pile under my desk, unopened, awaiting the recycling bin. I looked this quotation up and found that it comes from a piece by Dr Phil Hammond, the former Independent columnist, in which he lists a number of the claimed benefits for urine therapy concluding with “. . . and in Germany they have sold 100,000 copies of the urophiles bible, The Golden Fountain”. Thus is a dull fact turned into a citation. The claims made for the curative powers of urine are indeed impressive. A woman reported that her chilblains were cured by soaking her feet in her own urine. A builder described the practice of construction workers who peed on their hands at the end of the day to ease roughness and callouses. An HIV-positive man described how urine therapy had healed lesions inside his mouth and on his skin.

FOR THE uninitiated, medical and health insurance is a relatively new class of insurance in Malaysia compared to motor, fire or personal accident insurance. A lot has been written about it, but there continues to be confusion over what health insurance really is.

NETWORKINGAnother benefit of networking is establishing relationships, which can have a number of positive outcomes for small businesses. Forming a close relationship with a client, for example, might provide invaluable insight into their needs. In addition to giving the small business a good opportunity to promote or develop products and services to meet those needs, this insight might also help the small business owner to fix small problems before they escalate into large ones. The insights gained from one client can often be applied to other clients in order to improve those relationships. Close client relationships can also provide information about competitors, their relative strengths and weaknesses, and what it takes to stay ahead of them. Finally, networking can be an excellent source of leads, whether on new business opportunities, new career options, or further networking possibilities. For example, the head of a construction company that is erecting an office building might share a network with an interior designer. When the building is close to completion, the head of the construction company might provide the interior designer with leads on the occupants of the building and their furnishing needs. In turn, the interior designer might alert a network contact who sells office supplies when the new occupants are preparing to move into the building.
Communications media networks were born with the 1926 radio sign-on of the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) signaling the dawn of a new era of both communications and culture in America. The network concept is purely abstract–even in its practical form nothing but a series of wires or satellite connections. Yet the history and influence of the broadcast networks is one of the great stories of the twentieth century for though they did not create it the networks did cement the process of homogenizing American culture. By 1930 for the first time America was whistling to the same tunes laughing at the same comedians hearing the same politicians speeches–instantaneously. The taste and judgement of a relative few urban Northeastern network executives set national standards of everything from dialect and language to fashion and behavior. Only when the influence of the old-line networks had faded by the end of the century was it truly possible to grasp the power they held over the nation for so long.Though the number of networks has grown exponentially over the decades with the technology of their distribution methods improving by light-years the concept has remained the same. A network is simply a set of affiliate stations that receive programming from one central source then beam that programming by some method either broadcast wave or cable wire into the eyes and ears of a waiting public.

George DeVries remembers when complementary and alternative medicine wasnt quite as popular as it is today. DeVries co-founded American Specialty Health Plans in 1987 with only a few thousand dollars and a vision of what complementary health care could become. Thirteen years later, American Specialty Health Plans is the largest chiropractic and acupuncture health plan in the United States and the third largest specialty health plan in California, covering over 3.7 million Californians. An affiliate, American Specialty Health Networks, provides complementary health care programs and networks nationwide, covering over 20 million members. Revenues in the first year were $26,000, grew to $1 million in year five and were over $75 million in 1999, the companys twelfth year of operation. The firm employs over 400 people. The company began and operated in California for 12 years, offering primarily chiropractic services. Initially, the company only provided a small chiropractic network of 236 providers in Southern California, as well as limited administrative services. The companys first client was PacifiCare, covering 3,000 members through three employer groups.
NEW YORK — The demographic trend that is driving sales of prescription drugs, namely the aging of baby boomers, is also having a positive effect on demand for homeopathic remedies. Consumers who came of age in the 1960s and 1970s, when suspicion of mainstream practices–health-related and otherwise–was widespread, are more open to alternative medicine and accepting of homeopathy than earlier generations were. Today many of those consumers are turning to homeopathic remedies to treat themselves and their families.
HMOs: An Alternative THE ACCUMULATED COST OF health care in New Mexico — as in virtually all other areas of the nation — is enough at times to cause severe indigestion, if not outright cardiac arrest. Its likely why 80 percent of New Mexicans with some form of health insurance are under what is called a type of “managed care,” including Medicare and Medicaid. And a lot of that “managed care” is the choice by many companies to opt for Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) to contain costs while providing adequate benefits to employees.

Business Editors Each video program features eight thought provoking call center scenes. After viewing each scene, it gives the trainees an opportunity to brainstorm and discuss what they noticed was wrong. They then suggest the proper solutions to prevent these situations from happening in their own organization. The strength of this format lies in the premise that an interactive learning style will produce lasting results. Its easier to achieve learner buy-in when trainees contribute to the solution.
The telephone is an indispensable business tool. For many people, it is the first (and sometimes only) contact with the drug store. The seemingly constant ringing of the telephone may be an irritation to the drug store staff because it is an interruption in their work. Unfortunately, this attitude is often communicated to the unsuspecting caller and opportunities for sales are missed. Attitude: Everyone answering the telephone must see opportunity rather than irritation in every call. This is simply an attitude that should become part of store policy and training. Large companies that do much of their business by telephone regularly monitor employee telephone performance to insure standards are being met. A less invasive but still-watchful approach will work well in community drug stores.
Do you know how much business you lost today because of how your phone was answered (or not answered)? We know all this happens all too often because at many of my sales workshops, we do some tele-testing. We make calls to various competitors of the properties represented in our audience. We try to book a room for overnight, or a wedding reception, a meeting, etc. The participants get to hear the conversation via speaker phone. More than 90 percent of the inquiries we make, even if we get to talk to a real live person, are handled in a most unprofessional and unfriendly manner. Often, when we finally get connected to someone in reservations, sales or catering, he or she does a poor job in asking the right questions. Seems to me that if a caller is a qualified prospect, someone should be asking for a name and telephone number, at least. It looks like nobody gets any telephone training.

Rate control monitors the rate of temperature increase in both the afterburner and primary cleaning chamber. Any time that the temperature increases at an excessive rate above the pre-programmed temperature profile, water mist is sprayed in the cleaning chamber to retard the rate of smoke evolution. The furnace temperature is held at a level that safely cures the paint or plastic until low temperature volatiles are consumed. Once safe, the temperature is allowed to increase to operating temperature normally in the range 430[degrees]C to 480[degrees]C to pyrolysis the resins. Rate control provides the control to allow users to safely process materials that they have not been safely cleaned. Furnaces can be overloaded. If rate control senses a situation inside the furnace that cannot be safely controlled by the primary control system, a hi-h volume water spray is activated. If necessary, the primary burner is automatically shut off, the cleaning process stopped and can only be restarted by the operator after a safe temperature is reached.

How much individual room and group business did you lose today because of poor telephone handling skills at your property? Its amazing that throughout the years we havent done more to correct the way we handle telephone communications so that we can do more business. Even with all the new technologies available, we arent doing the job properly. We misuse and abuse the new stuff. How the telephone call is handled in every department of our properties is the key to doing more business. The hospitality industry is being challenged. Its a lot more difficult to get that individual customer or group than it was during the eight-year period through 2000. It just seems so unbelievable that with all the time, effort and resources we spend on marketing and sales that we wouldnt take great care in how we respond to telephone inquiries when someone wants to do business with us.

MicrophonesA microphone is a transducer that converts sound waves into electrical signals proportional to the strength of the sound. The microphone output can be recorded or transmitted.Although there are various types of microphones, the operating principal is the same. A diaphragm, either metal or plastic, vibrates in response to a sound wave and transmits the movement to an electrical component causing an induction of an electrical current. Microphones can be classified according to the way the diaphragm transmits sound or the way they pick up the sounds.

Britains charity shops face an uncertain future due to the explosion of deep-discounting high street fashion stores like Primark and Matalan and supermarket fashion lines. The Association of Charity Shops annual conference this week will set a challenge for future survival: how to persuade customers to buy second-hand clothes for the same price as new ones. “The upside is that if they buy, say, three new t-shirts for (pounds) 10, they are likely to be throwing something else out. That means they have more to donate, but we just have to keep up interest from people wanting to buy from us. We have to diversify all the time.”

Bone conduction microphones are used in communications systems in noisy environments, such as at fire sites, construction sites, and around helicopters. When a person speaks, the cranial bones vibrate in accordance with the sounds produced by their vocal cords. A bone conduction microphone converts cranial bone vibrations to electrical signals that can be communicated to a two-way radio. This way, the microphone doesnt pick up a lot of ambient noise. Mine Safety Appliances in the US hopes to bring us a microphone that is easily added to and removed from any type of protective helmet. When the helmet is being worn, the weight of the device is carried on a support that rests on the upper edge of the headband. In this way, the headband secures the microphone in direct engagement with the users head and can be easily secured to the headband without using or adjusting various moveable parts. A 36-mm condenser microphone for sound pressure measurements was introduced in 1950. The microphone was designed and developed by Dr. Schlegel from the Danish company Ortofon with a brass housing and aluminium diaphragm. The microphone was manufactured by Ortofon. They would produce batches often units and the production was shared between BK and another Danish company Radiometer. The new microphone was certainly an improvement over the Rochelle salt microphone as it could be calibrated with an electrostatic actuator. This method was also developed by Dr. Schlegel from Ortofon. The most common measurement microphones of the day are shown in Figure 1. In 19551 was sent to USA to implement service and sales at Brush Electronics in Cleveland, Ohio. This was my first introduction to real measurement microphones in the form of the Western Electric 640AA and the ANSI 224.4-1949 standard (see Figure 1). I knew of the W.E. 640AA from Beraneks Acoustic Measurements and from a doctoral thesis by A. Kjerbye Nielsen “Microphone Measurements.” In 1947 he invented a practical reciprocity calibration technique. Later this method was further developed by Dr. P. Rubak for more precise calibration. This was the basis of the IEC 327 standard. I had the opportunity to travel extensively in the US, meeting many acousticians, and to be exposed to many applications from rocket testing to listening for beetles moving inside oranges. On my return to Denmark, BK was having problems with the quality of the 36-mm microphones. The aluminium diaphragms were easily corroded and tended to develop short-circuiting whiskers between the diaphragm and backplate. I was asked by Viggo Kjær to work on a 1-inch microphone compatible with the ASA 224.4 standard. I developed a new design, where the diaphragm could be screwed onto the front of the microphone body and allowed diaphragm tension to be adjusted from the front. The W.E. 640AA and the ECL MR-103 were adjusted by moving the internal assembly.

A woman in her 60s died in hospital after she was struck by an ambulance answering a 999 call in Maidstone, Kent.
The craze for litigation based on whiplash - neck - injuries lasted through the Sixties and Seventies. Insurance companies paid out billions of dollars to claimants who were inventing their injuries entirely or, at best, creatively exaggerating them. But the whiplash phenomenon was just one small part of an unpublicised American industry: a criminal underworld devoted to the faking of personal injuries. This is not a book about a few slippery lawyers and doctors conspiring with greedy accident victims to talk up their symptoms and prognoses in order to exact additional compensation. Those scams exist but are the small beer of the trade. What Ken Dornstein describes in Accidentally on Purpose is a veritable gangland of ruthless, sophisticated operators using modern methods to defraud insurance companies out of huge sums. Here is one example: the “capper” is the planner, the choreographer, whose job is to stage an accident that will look like the real thing and lead to multiple claims. He hires “dummies”, the victims, often poor Hispanic immigrants. For as little as $100 each, they will pack into a car (”the squat car”) that they know will be involved in an accident. The capper then hires a specialist driver whose job is to provoke an innocent trucker into crashing into the squat car. The logistics are carefully planned: where, when and what kind of impact is required. The accident achieved, the dummies file their injury claims with the help of dishonest lawyers. Of course, they dont receive a cent of the proceeds. Occasionally, the staging goes wrong and the dummies are hurt badly or even killed. Recently, an attorney who masterminded these “swoop-and-squat” operations was indicted for his part in the death of a passenger in a squat car. Dornstein started his career as a private investigator in Los Angeles, looking into suspicious accidents. His book describes dozens of varieties of contemporary scams. But his exhaustive historical trawl is even more intriguing. The sheer imagination and expertise of some past fraudsters is impressive. In the early, jolting days of rail travel, there was “railway spine”, an alleged injury caused by sudden movements. “Slip-and-fallers” have been around for a century: “Banana Annie” carried her own peels for slipping on. One frequent claimant was capable, at will, both of dislocating her bones, and of haemorrhaging. Another regular had the advantage of a neck which, under X-ray, always showed up as broken. During the Depression years the fad was for self-mutilation, with the cleverer claimants managing to cash in from several companies on the basis of one “accidental” amputation. Along the way, Dornstein divertingly investigates the terminology of his subject. The term “ambulance chaser” - originally not the lawyer, but his tout - entered the language in the 1890s and was in common use by 1910. Shyster, to mean a dishonest lawyer, did not come, as is usually believed, from the nefarious activities of Sheuster, a New York attorney; Dornstein has discovered an earlier use and, besides, can find no trace of the existence of Sheuster. Accidentally, on Purpose contains a great deal of information which has never before been assembled, on a topic which has never before been so scrutinised. Dornstein has done prodigious research (his references amount to 70 pages) and does not always resist the temptation to tell us too much. On the other hand the book is clearly written, contains many interesting and obscure facts, and provides an insight into yet another, hitherto secret, crooked world.

A woman in her 60s died in hospital after she was struck by an ambulance answering a 999 call in Maidstone, Kent.
TWO wheels fell off an ambulance as it raced to a 999 call. The incident, in Sunderland, has raised fears about the safety of all Chevrolet ambulances. No-one was hurt in the incident.
AmbulanceAn ambulance is a self-propelled vehicle specifically designed to transport critically sick or injured people to a medical facility. Most ambulances are motor vehicles, although helicopters, airplanes, and boats are also used. The interior of an ambulance has room for one or more patients plus several emergency medical personnel. It also contains a variety of supplies and equipment that are used to stabilize the patients condition while en route. The earliest ambulances were simple two-wheeled carts used to carry sick or wounded soldiers who were unable to walk by themselves. The word ambulance comes from the Latin word ambulare, meaning to walk or move about. The first ambulances specifically used to transport patients to a medical facility were developed in the late 1700s in France by Dominique-Jean Larrey, surgeon-in-chief in Napoleons army. Larrey noted that it took almost a full day for wounded soldiers to be carried to field hospitals, and that most of them died in that time from want of assistance. To render more immediate aid and provide faster transportation, he designed a horse-drawn carriage staffed by a medical officer and assistant with room for several patients on stretchers. The first military ambulance corps in the United States was organized in 1862 during the Civil War as part of the Union army. The first civilian ambulance service in the United States was organized three years later by the Cincinnati Commercial Hospital. By the turn of the century, most major hospitals had their own private ambulances. The first motorized ambulance went into operation in Chicago in 1899.

Limousine has diverse meanings, from an inhabitant of the region around Limoges, once called Limousin, and which in the 18th century was looked at askance as home to “an old barbarous French, formerly brought into this country out of France”. The OED overlooks the limousine which was a cloak worn by the driver of a cart whose passenger section was shielded from the elements - hence the vehicle itself and all those gaudy, dark- windowed successors which could house nine cows.
GREAT food, cheap wine and an unspoilt landscape make France the most popular destination with Britons for short breaks and longer holidays. JACQUI THAKE takes a trip through the countryside of Limousin. AS we planned the morning hike across the countryside of Limousin our French hostess urged us: “Make sure you wear your baskets.” Confusion turned to hilarity when we realised that baskets in French meant trainers. Anyway, suitably booted for our expedition round the magnificent Lac du Causse in the Couze Valley, we set off in high spirits as the sun had come out at last.

There is a scene in the 1967 film Meet Whiplash Willie (in England, The Fortune Cookie) in which an ambulance-chasing shyster lawyer played by Walter Matthau is trying to persuade a football player slightly hurt during a game to launch a lawsuit for compensation for his injuries. “I hate to break it to you, kid, but you got a spinal injury . . . your left leg is numb and you got no feeling in the first three fingers of your right hand.” “Youre crazy,” the Jack Lemmon character replies, “I can move my hand.
An ambulance crew have branded a thief who stole their navigation equipment, putting them off the road for 14 hours, as sick. Dave Langley, divisional officer for South Shields, said: Its absolutely useless to the thief, but its theft left the ambulance off the road until Wednesday afternoon.

PLEASANTON — From the moment Bill Wheeler told his friends and family that he was serious about getting into the limousine business, few took him for his word. Wheeler was the last person they could picture going into a business that revolved around punctuality. “I had never been on time anywhere in my life,” Wheeler said. “What people didnt understand is that if I were paid to be on time, then thats an entirely different matter.”
